A bold and responsible pilot for more sustainable printing

Fazer, Marvaco and Pyroll boldly take a step towards more sustainable packaging production on a large scale as they pilot GreenerPrinting™ on Fazer Puikula bread packages.

In its new press release, Fazer describes how the piloting of a new printing method relates to Fazer’s sustainability efforts. Sustainable printing advances Fazer’s goal of moving onto sustainable packaging materials. “With changes to the color separation, we can use 25% less ink compared to our previous printing method for the Fazer Puikula Pehmeämpi Täysjyvä packages,” says Piia Soininen-Tengvall, Senior Manager of Packaging Development at Fazer Bakeries.

For the Fazer Puikula Pehmeämpi Täysjyvä product, the eco-efficiency of the printing has been increased by performing the color separation with Expanded Gamut Printing (EGP™), which is a prerequisite for receiving the GreenerPrinting™ label. The EGP™ technology allows for reduced environmental impact in addition to high-quality prints. In this new technology, the inks that have traditionally been mixed manually have been replaced with standardized, digitally separated primary colors. The method reduces both ink consumption and the need to clean the printing machine between runs. Consequently, the reduction in process cleaning decreases both ink waste and the use of cleaning solvents.

This is a large-scale pilot where we can follow the benefits of EGP™ in the production a high-volume consumer product, in co-operation with the brand owner and packaging printing company,” says Kai Lankinen, Marvaco’s Chairman of the Board. The pilot is also a part of Lankinen’s upcoming doctoral thesis on EGP.

In its press release, Fazer also states that, in addition to the Puikula Pehmeämpi Täysjyvä packages, EGP™ will also be tested on the 200-gram Oululainen crisp rye bread cartons in the fall.

Fazer Bakeries Ltd is one of the first to choose a more sustainable printing method for its packages, which now have the GreenerPrinting™ label. Prepress company Marvaco is the European pioneer in EGP, and it is also responsible for monitoring the criteria for GreenerPrinting™. Pyroll Group, the producer of Fazer’s bread packages, is a Finnish forerunner in using EGP™ in printing of bread packages.
